4 Bottom Lines:
- Clear, Error-Free Delivery
- Speak clearly and audibly.
- If you mess up a word or trip on a phrase, err on the side of caution and restart the audio recording. It’s better to take the extra time than to risk confusing a student.
- Explain the Feedback—Don't Read It
- Give short explanations for mistakes and advanced expressions; there is no need to read the incorrect and corrected versions. This is more helpful than just reading what the student said and the corrected version, and this will also save you a great deal of time.
- Background Noise
- Ensure that you are in a quiet environment with no background noise. Your voice should be clearly audible and unobstructed.
- Encouraging Attitude
- Maintain a warm tone throughout your verbal feedback and offer ample encouragement to the student.
Verbal Feedback is broken down into 4 categories: Pronunciation, Language Mistakes, Advanced Expressions, and Summary. Please see below for guidelines on each.
-
Pronunciation:
- Introduce yourself (“Hi, it’s Teacher _____ from Rocket Cat. Encouragement about their homework. Let’s practice pronunciation. Repeat after me”)
- Read each pronunciation practice word at least 2 times
- Word slowly
- Word natural speed
- For especially difficult words, it may be necessary to break the word into syllables or to focus on specific sounds using synthetic phonics
- Give encouragement
-
Language Mistakes:
- Briefly explain each mistake to the best of your abilities using simple language
-
Advanced Expressions:
- When applicable, briefly explain the new word that was introduced in the simplest language possible
- When applicable, briefly explain ways of making answers better: giving examples, reasons, and extra details
-
Summary
- Repeat each pronunciation error once
- Remind the student of the mistakes to avoid
- Remind the student of advanced phrases or vocabulary words to practice
- Give encouragement
